Upon meeting Debbie Edwards, it’s immediately obvious she’s passionate about what she does.

Edwards is the manager of the Lions Club Park Senior Center.

I met her Nov. 18 during the annual Giving Thanks Luncheon hosted by the Veterans of Killeen, the Bob Gilmore Senior Center and the Lions Club Park Senior Center.

Nearly 600 seniors packed the Killeen Civic and Conference Center but no one has a smile as broad as Edwards.

Edwards has been at the center and the Bob Gilmore Senior Center for a combined 29 years.

The newer Lions Club Park facility provides local seniors with recreational and educational activities and classes. Some of the activities offered there are ceramics, dancing, arts and crafts and movie nights.

Edwards said “seeing people enjoy life” is what she enjoys most about being at the senior center and what has kept her there for nearly three decades.

While Edwards’ first love is art, seniors run a close second, she said.

“My grandmother was my mentor and seniors have always held a special place in my heart and been my second love,” she said. “Working with them, helping them and just seeing them enjoy life is always rewarding.”

If you have ever met Edwards, you know that working with seniors isn’t just a job, it’s her passion.

The center, 1700-B E. Stan Schlueter Loop, is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The center also serves lunch at 11:30 a.m. for $2.
