As temperatures drop and the weather gets colder, gas bills will increase as residents turn up the heat to keep their homes warm for the winter.

Some residents may not have the means to pay the increase

in their gas bills, but through an annual program fromAtmos

Energy, the company is working to supplement payments for their elderly, disabled and low-income customers.

“It’s as easy as rounding up the pennies on your natural gas bill,” said Dan Alderson, Atmos director of energy assistance, “That excess change goes directly into our Sharing the Warmth program.”

Michael Street, Atmos Energy spokesman, said customers also have the option to donate any desired amount by checking the “voluntary donation” box on the back of their gas bill.

“(Share the Warmth) is important because there are customers out there that need help paying their bills,” he said. “This is an opportunity for our customers and our company itself to contribute.”

Street didn’t have a specific number for the number of donations the program typically receives, but he said, “It’s a significant total of dollars that are allocated through the program.”

Atmos Energy customers in need of assistance paying their gas bills can visit Hill Country Community Action Association, 916 Rev. R.A. Abercrombie Drive, Killeen, to see if they qualify for the program.

“We encourage people to participate in this program because it really does make a difference, especially when the weather turns cold and people use their gas more for heating,” Street said. “This is an opportunity for all of us in the community to come together and make a difference.”
