To generate interest in adding a second skate park on Fort Hood, Actus Lend Lease and Fort Hood National Bank are sponsoring the Skate Park Bonanza from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
The event, which will be at 5485 Hoover Hill Road, behind the High Chapparal Youth Center in Pershing Village, is set to feature local skate shops like Sk8ter Shack and others, said Michelle Wallace, Fort Hood Family Housing communications manager.
Actus is the post's privatized family housing contractor, which took over family housing at Fort Hood in 2001 under the Residential Communities Initiative.
Wallace said the bonanza is a grassroots effort.
"In order to solicit grants, we need to show active community involvement," she said.
Not only will the event gauge community interest in a skate park, it will provide a fun event for residents, Wallace added.
Fort Hood has one skate park at Bronco Youth Center in Building 6602 on Tank Destroyer Boulevard, between 27th and 31st Streets. It was built in 2007, according to information from Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, the organization that oversees the park.
In surveying the on-post community, residents expressed interest in having more activities for older children, Wallace said.
"To better create a sense of community, we continuously assess the needs of residents and responded with a skate park as one way to fill that need," she said. "We are currently looking at ways to furthers improve their housing experience with us."
In six years Actus has built more than 70 playgrounds and two community centers that feature pools and splash parks, Wallace said.
Also on Saturday, an Earth Hour/jam session will be at the Comanche III Community Center, 53301 Drum Song Trail.
Fort Hood residents are set to perform at the free, open-mic night, which is scheduled from 6 to 9:30 p.m. There will also be activities for children.
