TEMPLE — Firefighters were busy with small fires in eastern Bell County on Monday.

A burn ban issued by the fire marshal’s office was in effect Monday in Bell County because winds were expected to reach 24 mph with gusts up to 33 mph.

A high fire danger resulted from the wind and low humidity, according to the National Weather Service.

One fire reported around noon at the intersection of Little Flock and Bob White roads was on the opposite side of the road from where an arson fire was started recently, said Fire Chief David Borders of the Little River-Academy Volunteer Fire Department.

Firefighters extinguished the fire quickly, Borders said.

Officials said about 10 arson grass fires were started in the past year, all in the area of Little Flock and Bob White roads between Temple and Little River-Academy and just off Southeast H.K. Dodgen Loop.

Temple Fire & Rescue firefighters responded to a fire reported Monday near gas pumps at the intersection of West Adams Avenue and Kegley Road. The fire was actually located at a Cefco convenience store at the intersection of West Adams Avenue and Crepe Myrtle.

The burning grass began near an electric pole and moved toward the convenience store’s entrance onto West Adams Avenue.

“It was probably started by a cigarette,” Capt. Steve Creek said. “The concrete walking trail helped keep it from spreading further.”

The Texas Department of Transportation posted digital signs on Interstate 35 Monday morning alerting drivers of a controlled burn.

Creek said a controlled burn near I-35 and Gillmeister Lane was extinguished by a controlled burn permit holder after about 11:30 a.m., said Thomas Pechal, spokesman for Temple Fire & Rescue.
