COPPERAS COVE — The Copperas Cove Independent School District will be on its own to make up some of the days students missed because of a string of bomb threats in December.

After state officials denied a request to waive three days, district Superintendent Joseph Burns said Monday that CCISD will use two “bad weather makeup days” already built into its 2012-13 school year calendar.

The two makeup days are Monday, Presidents Day and March 29. Staff will be working and all students will attend classes, according to a statement from the district.

Texas school districts are required to set aside two makeup days each year in their district’s calendar to be used if days are missed due to inclement weather or health and safety emergencies.

DeEtta Culbertson, a spokeswoman for the Texas Education Agency, said the district needed to use those makeup days before requesting a waiver from the agency. “Once they use those days, they can request a waiver for additional days if they don’t have another way to make them up.”

Burns said the agency would grant a waiver for the third day if the district used the bad weather days for the other two.

In late 2012, 11 bomb threats were reported at Copperas Cove High School, Copperas Cove Junior High and S.C. Lee Junior High School.

In responding to the wave of threats, the district was forced to shut down shortly before its winter break.

Nine students were detained by Copperas Cove police in connection with the threats.
