Driving out of Killeen on State Highway 195 got a lot smoother with the opening of a new overpass at State Highway 201.

“Architecturally it is gorgeous, and I think that will add a lot to the aesthetics of the city,” Killeen Transportation Director George Lueck said.

While the project is about two weeks from completion, Lueck said drivers are being led to the bridge as a detour while work continues on the feeder roads.

“The fact that 195 is one of the major corridors going north-south for the city means increased safety,” Lueck said. “You’ve gotten rid of a conflict of two state highways coming together.”

The $18.2 million project was funded through the Texas Department of Transportation’s Pass-Through financing program, where the city pays the up-front cost of the project and is reimbursed by the state.

The project, which began in October 2011, also included widening State Highway 201 to four lanes from State Highway 195 to the Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport. It also improves access to Texas A&M University-Central Texas.

During construction, detours and lane closures were the biggest challenges for drivers, Lueck said.

“It seemed like people adjusted pretty well,” he said.

With the completion of the overpass, the city will move on to the next phase of the Stagecoach Road reconstruction project between East Trimmier Road to Tyrel Drive.

City staff will present bids for the Stagecoach project to the Killeen City Council in about two weeks, Lueck said.
