NOLANVILLE Three strangers Monday afternoon snatched a woman from a burning vehicle before it became fully engulfed, said Nolanville police officer Lt. Roger Tighe.

She was in great pain but was conscious when they took her out of here, said Tighe, referring to the woman, whose identity he was not able to obtain before she was transported by the Harker Heights Fire Department Ambulance Service.

The one-vehicle accident occurred around 5:30 p.m. Monday off U.S. Highway 190 East underneath the Edwards Drive Overpass.

Witnesses said the woman either lost a tire or the tire went flat, and she lost control, Tighe said. The late-model Ford Escape sport utility vehicle then veered to the right of the roadway, and crashed head-on with one of the bridges columns, fitting itself between two columns as though she parallel parked it. The vehicle then caught fire and its interior was destroyed.

At one point, police had to shut down eastbound traffic on U.S. Highway 190.
