Solana Sullivan is one person using her freedom of choice to impact her corner of the world.

"My daughter is a child that is full of life; she's all about living and experiencing life," her father, Buddy Sullivan, said of his 16-year-old daughter.

Sullivan was recently nominated for the Absolutely Incredible Kid award, and will be honored at a banquet Thursday afternoon.

For Buddy, raising his children with the freedom of choice is important.

"It's up to them to choose to succeed and to accomplish whatever they want," he said.

And that translates into helping people for Killeen High School junior, Sullivan, who spends every Friday night volunteering at the Seadragon Aquatic Program at Fort Hood.

"In her daily endeavors as a young teen, she promotes courage, generosity, confidence, motivation, encouragement and leadership," Peggy Muller, program coordinator for the program, said in a nomination form. "Her dedication to help others and still maintain her daily responsibilities indicates an unusual and exceptional person whose future will permanently change other lives positively."

Sullivan said she has volunteered at the aquatic program for over a year after starting there as a project.

"Peggy and I really got attached and I got attached to the kids and I kept volunteering there," she said.

She's inspired to keep volunteering "when a child has been working for a really long time at something and they finally get the thing they were struggling with or they smile or I know they're having fun."

Sullivan is one of 10 area youth who will be recognized as an Incredible Kid by the Camp Fire USA Tejas Council at a celebration from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday.

Reservations for the celebration may be made by calling the local Camp Fire USA office at (254) 773-6614. Cost is $25 per person.
