A 46-year-old sexual assault suspect stabbed himself in the chest late Wednesday night while he fled from officers preparing to search his property, Killeen police said.

The man was in critical but stable condition at Scott & White Hospital Thursday night, according to a Killeen police news release.

Killeen police received a report Wednesday of a sexual assault in the 500 block of Valley Road. Officers obtained a search warrant that evening for the address.

The suspect fled in his vehicle around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday as tactical response officers prepared outside the residence to execute the "high-risk" warrant, spokeswoman Carroll Smith said. Officers captured the suspect after a short chase, during which the suspect stabbed himself in the chest.

He underwent surgery at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center before he was transferred to intensive care at Scott & White.

The suspect's name has been withheld pending a case review by the Bell County District Attorney's Office.
