TEMPLE– A 5-year-old Temple girl battled life-threatening injuries Tuesday after an SUV struck her while on the way to school.

An SUV hit Alyson Moreno, 5, near the intersection of East Adams Avenue and North 20th Street around 7 a.m. Alyson was walking with a group of friends to catch a school bus to Hector P. Garcia Elementary School. The other children were not injured.

Temple paramedics transported Alyson to Scott & White Hospital where she was being treated for life-threatening injuries, Hunt said.

She sustained injuries to her head, face, upper body and legs. She remained in the hospital Tuesday afternoon.

An SUV driven by Veronica Magana, 26, of Rogers, hit Alyson as she crossed East Adams Avenue headed north. Alyson was headed to a bus stop near North 20th Street and East Barton Avenue. Magana was not injured.

Temple police investigators spent hours at the scene reconstructing the accident and determining the factors involved, Hunt said.

Traffic had to be diverted for more than two hours to clear and investigate the scene.

It was too early to tell what caused the accident and if charges would be filed, Hunt said Tuesday afternoon.
