A 62-year-old Harker Heights teacher died Thursday in a one-vehicle rollover accident at the Killeen-Harker Heights border.

At 6:42 a.m., Killeen police responded to a call about a Hyundai SUV that had run off the road into a ditch at the intersection of Roy Reynolds Drive and Veterans Memorial Boulevard.

The driver, Karnakristine M. Counter, 62, was transported to Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center on Fort Hood, where she was pronounced dead by doctors at 10:47 a.m., according to a Killeen Police Department news release.

Leslie Gilmore, KISD public information officer, said Counter was a teacher for eight years before joining Killeen Independent School District in August. She taught middle school special education resource math courses at Eastern Hills for one semester before her death. She was known by friends and colleagues as "Karna," a KISD news release indicated.

KISD counselors were sent to Eastern Hills Middle School Thursday to help faculty and students cope with Counter's sudden death.

KPD spokeswoman Carroll Smith said it is believed Counter was on her way to Eastern Hills when the accident happened.

A witness said the Hyundai was headed south on Roy Reynolds Drive when it ran through a red light and crossed all lanes of traffic before flipping upside down in a ditch on the south side of Veterans Memorial Boulevard.

Smith said police have no clues about why the Hyundai went through the intersection.
