There are just 20 days and 50 teachers to go.

With less than a month until the start of school, both Killeen and Copperas Cove school districts are working hard to see there is a teacher in each classroom before the first bell rings. The two districts, combined, are looking for about 50 qualified educators.

Its going exceptionally well, said Steve Cook, director of personnel for the Killeen school district.

KISD began the summer with 345 teaching vacancies and has narrowed the openings to just under 40.

Weve had some days here where weve hired 20 to 22 teachers, Cook said.

KISD is also still hiring school bus drivers.

Summer hiring for KISD is a challenge for KISD every year, due to the transient community, Cook said. But this year the human resources department is actual a little ahead of itself on hiring. KISD got the jump not only on hiring teachers, but administration as well. Every campus principal and assistant principal position has already been filled.

We feel very fortunate the leadership was in place early, Cook said.

The Web-based posting of and applying for jobs has been very helpful, he said. KISD has received 1,200 online applications since January.

Another round of new teacher orientation takes place next week and Cook said hes hopeful to have all the teaching slots filled by then.

I think were going to be OK, Cook said.

Hiring has also been mostly smooth sailing for Copperas Cove school district. CCISD has hired 80 new teachers this summer and has about 10 still to go.

Basically, were moving along fairly well, said Martin Brubaker, CCISD assistant superintendent for human resource services. Brubaker said certain slots have been harder to fill than others, though, like special education, math and choral music.

He said he hopes to bring the teacher seach to an end by Aug. 15, the first day back.

Well be very close, Brubaker said, but all the critical areas will be covered.
