One of Killeen’s oldest neighborhoods parks, Stewart Park, will benefit from a kickball tournament held Saturday at Killeen Community Center Athletic Fields.

The tournament was sponsored by the Greater Killeen Young Professionals.

“This was the second year for Kickin’ it for the Park,” said chairwoman Monica Alexander. “We had hoped for 10 teams to compete but eight signed up, which is two more than last year. That’s a plus, and it’s exciting.”

The group already invested time and money to improve the park by purchasing and painting awnings for park benches, installing an irrigation system and a welcome sign, and planting eight trees.

With the money raised this year, the young professionals will build a pavilion to cover the playground equipment, Alexander said.

The teams competing in the tournament were from Killeen, with the exception of one team from Austin. Each team paid $250 to enter and was made up of 10 to 15 players. Some teams play on a regular basis. Others were organized for the tournament.

Jennifer Hetzel, a member of the Wrecking Ballers, said she had fun despite not winning any games.

“We lost both of our games and are moping around a little, but we played hard and are having a great time.”
