UMHB hosts Cru film screenings

BELTON – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor's Cru Film program is hosting screenings of its spring 2012 short film project, "The Walk," at noon Monday in the Lord Conference Center in the Parker Academic Center and at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Brindley Auditorium in the York Science Center. Each screening is free and open to the public.

"The Walk" is about a young woman who grew up with an absentee father. As her own wedding approaches, she discovers that while her earthly father may disappoint her, her heavenly father never will.

The Colony soldier killed in Afghanistan

JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. - The Defense Department said a 21-year-old soldier from Joint Base Lewis-McChord was killed in Afghanistan on his first deployment.

Spc. Philip C. S. Schiller of The Colony, Texas, died Wednesday in Kandahar province of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small-arms fire.

He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, at JBLM. The military said Schiller enlisted in the Army in June 2010. His unit deployed last month.

Immigration agents arrest 6 for crash where 9 illegals died

EL PASO - Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested six alleged members of a human trafficking ring that was smuggling nine immigrants killed in a van wreck in South Texas on Tuesday.

A criminal complaint filed Thursday said ICE agents arrested Carmelo Diaz, Gloria Solis, Alexander Barrios Grajales, Alejandro Garcia Nava, Jose Vega Zapata and Luis Julian Vargas. The arrest was first reported by The Monitor.

ICE's investigation led to the discovery of a stash house to where the victims were being transported. A dozen illegal immigrants were located there. At least four of the survivors of the crash were detained as material witnesses.

5 gang members sentenced to prison

WASHINGTON - Five members of the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas were sentenced to federal prison for the beating of a prospective member who violated rules of conduct.

A judge sentenced Zechariah Aaron Johnston to seven years; Stephen Kyle Knebel to two years; Robert Lynn Sheats to three years; and Johnny Ray Nichols to 18 months in prison. In March, Rusty Dwayne Plante received three years.

All five pleaded guilty to the aggravated assault.
