Lane closure on State Highway 195

The southbound outside lane of State Highway 195 will be closed for one quarter mile north and one quarter mile south of the intersection with State Highway 201. The closure begins Thursday and is scheduled to continue through September.

The southbound inside lane will remain open. Vehicles will be able to access State Highway 201 via the Reese Creek detour.

College hosts math day on Thursday

Central Texas College will host its sixth annual Mathematics Awareness Day from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday in the Mayborn Planetarium. The event is part of the Mathematical Association of America's celebration of Math Awareness Month and is free and open to the public.

The guest speaker is Bill Briggs, co-author of Briggs-Cochran calculus textbook, who will discuss statistics and the use of data.

Belton ISD plans sessions on bond

Belton Independent School District superintendent Susan Kincannon will present information on the May 12 school bond election.

The public can attend a session at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Belton Middle School cafeteria or at 6 p.m. May 3 in the small theater at Belton High School.

Man bleeds to death after mower accident

SAN ANTONIO - Police said an elderly man apparently bled to death after a brush cutter he was using nearly severed both of his legs.

The incident happened Monday morning while 83-year-old Edmond Turgeon was trimming brush behind a house in southern San Antonio. Police Sgt. Bobby Bradley told the San Antonio Express-News that the old-model brush cutter he was using was self-propelled and lacked a blade guard.

Detained immigrant children move to San Antonio air base

SAN ANTONIO - Federal officials are making an Air Force base near San Antonio the temporary home of 100 unescorted children stopped by the U.S. Border Patrol because a network of contracted shelters is overwhelmed with more kids than it can accommodate.

The first of the children arrived at Lackland Air Force Base on Monday. The children, apprehended at different times and locations, are under the charge of the Unaccompanied Children's Services division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Fugitive sex offender caught in Austin

AUSTIN - Texas Department of Public Safety authorities said an ex-con described as a "high risk" sex offender was arrested in Austin after he fled a Houston halfway house two weeks ago.

Police said 42-year-old Michael Elbert Young was arrested Tuesday morning after choking and robbing a woman. He initially gave officers a false name.
