FORT HOOD Recent high school graduate Jennifer Deem is looking at eight expensive years of school.

When she graduates from dental school in nearly a decade, shell have $1,000 less of debt to worry about, thanks to the Central Texas-Fort Hood Chapter of the Associa-tion of the United States Army.

The chapter handed out 41 scholarships, each worth $1,000, to area students during a luncheon Thursday at the Fort Hood Officers Club.

Deem, who graduated last month from Copperas Cove High School, received one of the scholarships.

This will help pay for a couple of my classes and books, which is very great, said Deem, who plans to attend the University of Texas at Tyler for an undergraduate degree in biology before heading to UT Health Sciences Center in San Antonio to become an orthodontist.

The chapter has offered scholarships for 10 years now, said Steve Hanik, the groups vice president for scholarships and public affairs manager for Sprint, a corporate partner in the scholarship effort. Including this years scholarships, the chapter has now handed out $250,000 to area students, Hanik said.

Scholarship recipient Victoria Chings school bills might mirror that total by the time she is finished with her education.

Medical school is my ultimate goal, so I was hoping for some help getting there, said Ching, a sophomore pre-medical and psychology major at UT-Austin.

Chings mother, Yonsuk, said she was grateful when she learned her daughter would receive the scholarship.

Im so thankful; I didnt expect this gift, she said.

The students were encouraged by Lt. Gen. Thomas F. Metz, commander of III Corps and Fort Hood, to continue to search for scholarship opportunities as they continue their educations.

You are the future, Metz told the students. You are who we are fighting the Global War on Terrorism for.

Other scholarship recipients were Lisbeth Aaron Boule, Dana Burke, Monica Campbell, Jessie Cayton, Rickie Cayton, Jamie Cedillo, Paige Cox, Tatiana DeKoning, Katherine Eikenberg and Joshua Flanagan.

Also, Allison Garrett, James Gray, Derek Jones, Scott Key, Miles Kroeger, Tiffany Kroontje, Jessica Menking, Lavonya McAlister, Amber McCloud, Robert Moore, Shannon Neely, Katelyn Nelson and Kimberly Norville.
