BAYTOWN — A 52-year-old Southeast Texas man died following a Christmas Day mishap with a flare gun in his backyard.

The Chambers County Sheriff’s Office said John David Cook Jr. died following the Wednesday morning incident in the Baytown area.

The Houston Chronicle reported that deputies said Cook’s wife told investigators she woke up to her husband’s screams in the living room.

His hands were severely injured and he had an open wound in his chest.

Investigators determined Cook had been working with the flare gun on the patio.

He was flown by helicopter to a hospital where he later died.
