TEMPLE – The doors to Scott & White's Center for Advanced Medicine at 2401 31st St. opened Tuesday afternoon.
The center features eight floors that will include a Women's Center, Children's Hospital, an intensive care unit, a neonatal ICU, a pediatric ICU, a cardiac cath lab, an emergency department, and the Heart and Vascular Institute.
"This center was built around the concept of families," said Dr. Alfred Knight, president and CEO of Scott & White. "We wanted for someone to walk in and not feel like they've entered a hospital but a hotel."
Each of the 419 private beds contains advanced technology that allows the center to be digital, wireless and virtually paperless.
"The doctor can view your records and charts from their house," Knight said.
The children's hospital features flat-screen televisions and folding beds for parents to sleep comfortably in their child's room. Nurses' stations are set in between rooms, rather than down a hallway.
The days of the notorious "sit and wait" emergency department are no more. The 24,000-square-foot department has 38 exam rooms and three triage rooms.
"The volumes (in the emergency department) were so overwhelming," said Pat Currie, chief hospital officer of Scott & White. "Not only have we increased the amount of beds, but we've also doubled the amount of ICU beds. It won't be the total answer, but it will resolve half of the issues."
Scott & White also expects to see an increase in employment opportunities.
"In general, as we increase, we will have more job opportunities become available," Knight said. "For one bed, there will be five new positions. But growth has to be gradual."
Scott & White has no plans of slowing down in terms of expansion and growth.
"We're building two more hospitals that are expected to open this summer," Knight said.
Scott & White is building a Cancer Research Institute and a Continuing Care Hospital on the former site of Texas Instruments in Temple. It is also adding a 72-bed hospital at the University Medical Campus in Round Rock.
