Communities back crime-fighting event

With the flick of a match, barbecue grills will be smoking up the local area when neighbors meet neighbors along their respective blocks for the annual National Night Out festivities.

From 7 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, neighbors are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside to join forces and give crime and drugs a going-away party. Its also a chance to have a really good time while observing this crime prevention program.

Neighborhoods are encouraged to host a variety of events, such as block parties, cookouts, contests, and youth activities.

City officials, police officers and firefighters will be cruising the various neighborhoods.

As of Friday, the following block parties were being hosted and scheduled at the indicated locations:

Killeen

n Terri Garcia in the 400 block of Wisconsin St.

n Sasha Orta at 507 W. Green Ave.

n Jane Escobedo at 2607 Lu Cir.

n Janis Taylor at 1202 E. Avenue E.

n Gregoria Chavez at 104 Cheaney Spur Dr.

n Linda Person at 4401 E. Rancier Ave.

n Linda Person at 1101 N. Twin Creek Dr.

n Mary Patton at 2011 Sundown Dr.

n Christy Shepard at 1701 Terrace Dr.

n Wayne Cummings at 2503 Rampart Loop.

n Mandy Hollinger at 906 Illinois Ave.

n Evenger Conelly at 503 Little Ave.

n Janis Taylor at 731 Wolf St.

n Brenda Brown at 2700 Verbena Loop.

Central Texas College

The Central Texas College police will kick off their activities at 7 p.m. at the Married/Single Parents Housing playground, where fingerprinting, police car rides, photos with uniformed police officers will be offered along with free food and drinks.

We are one of eight colleges in the nation that participate as an active members of the National Association of Town Watch, said CTC Police Chief Mary Wheeler.

This is the eighth year that the CTC Police Department has held festivities, and we have had such great success with the program that we look forward to it every year.

Fort Hood

From 6 to 9 p.m., Chaffee and McNair villages will have a combined National Night Out event at the Bronco Youth Center off of Tank Destroyer.

From 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Comanche I, II, III, Montague, Walker, Wainwright, Pershing and Venable villages events will be held at their respective Community Life Buildings.
