BELTON A Bell County grand jury Wednesday indicted a 48-year-old Georgia man accused of being involved in an international e-mail lottery scam.

Michael Nnamdi Nweke, aka John King, was indicted on a June 19 charge of attempted theft over $20,000.

The incident stems from an ongoing investigation commonly referred to as the Nigerian Money Correspon-Gadence Scam, a Killeen Police Department news release stated in June after Nwekes arrest.

According to the arrest affidavit, the victim received official looking-letters from European banks and the Interior Ministry of Spain stating that he had won a substantial amount of money in a lottery in Spain.

The victim was informed that in order to receive the money he must first pay fees that are associated with the prize, such as governmental fees, security fees and administrative fees.

Despite never having entered a lottery or any other contest, the victim wired over $20,000 in several small wire transfers to an organization and individual in Madrid, Spain.

The victim started getting phone calls from someone saying he would meet with a John King to arrange final payment, First Assistant District Attorney Murff Bledsoe said.

The final payment would be $56,534. The victim was told that after he paid the final amount he would finally receive his prize.

It was at this point that the victim became suspicious and contacted the police.

Nweke made arrangements to come to Killeen to meet with the victim and collect the final payment before the winnings could be disbursed. The Killeen Police Depart-ment detectives were made aware of the meeting and Nweke was arrested.

Nweke denied any knowledge of the scam and told detectives he was acting as an agent for his cousin in Madrid. The defendant offered to help authorities track down any European agents involved in the operation.

Nweke claimed to be an American, but his accent made police question his nationality despite carrying a Georgia drivers license.

Its questionable as to whether that is his Georgia drivers license, Bledsoe said.
