HARKER HEIGHTS – Council members shared a special lunch with city employees Thursday to show the council's appreciation for the staffers' hard work and to celebrate the holidays.
"It is the least we can do to award them for everything they have done," Mayor Ed Mullen said.
The city has the greatest staff in the area, Mullen said, adding that the employees do a lot for the city.
The meal, served in the Kitty Young Council Chambers, included turkey, mashed potatoes, rolls, green beans and pies. The annual luncheon has been conducted for several years.
But it was not the food that was important, said Tony Costa, city judge; it was about the camaraderie and the spirit of the season.
Department staff members filed in and out of the room throughout the day to partake in the meal. Several council members shared food and stories with the employees.
"I am not participating. I am sharing lunch with my friends," Mullen said. "It is not just a worker-and-boss relationship. I have known a lot of these people for 10 years or more."
