Killeen Parks and Recreation moved its synthetic ice-skating rink indoors to the Special Events Center, located on W.S. Young Drive, on Friday.

"We moved it over here on Friday to get it out of the weather," said Megian Douglass, Parks and Recreation superintendent.

Prior to the move, the rink was located outside the Killeen Recreation Center.

The new location allows for those wanting to skate to do so without worrying about the bad weather Killeen has seen over the last couple of days, such as the strong winds on Saturday, Douglass said.

The rink is several slick tiles connected together that allows for a person wearing traditional ice skates to glide over its surface, Douglass said. The tiles span about 5,000 square feet.

Some families, such as the Farias, have already taken to the fake ice to enjoy some skating.

"We wanted to bring the kids ice-skating," said Maria Farias, a Fort Hood mother. "It is something they don't get to do often. Two of them have never done it."

Isaiah Farias, 4, Xavair Farias, 14, and their dad, Gene Farias, all took to the rink while Maria watched them glide in their skates.

"For those that have never been ice-skating it starts a Christmas memory," Maria said.

Isaiah enjoyed skating with his father and brother on Sunday, he said while attempting not to fall down.

"I like skating on here. It's fun," Isaiah said.

The rink is open Fridays 6 to 9 p.m., Saturdays 1 to 9 p.m. and Sundays 1 to 7 p.m. From Dec. 26 to Jan. 6, the rink will be open 6 to 9 p.m. on weekdays. It costs $5 per person to skate for 30 minutes which includes the price of skates.

"It gives the citizens something new and different to do," Douglass said.
