The synthetic ice-skating rink in the Killeen Community Center may not be the real thing, but it's close.

And close is the key, since the nearest ice-skating rink, located in Pflugerville.

Waco doesn't have one; neither does Temple, Belton, Harker Heights or Copperas Cove.

So while it may not be perfect, it still feels the same, said Parks and Recreation Superintendent Megian Douglass.

"The turnout is a lot better now that we've changed the location," Douglass said, part of an effort to increase interest citywide. "Information is going out to schools, and we'll work with people, like if they want to reserve it for a whole day, they have that option."

The skating rink has been open since early December, and will remain open until Feb. 1. It is open seven days a week until then; Monday through Friday from 6 to 9 p.m., Saturday 1 to 7 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m.

The synthetic ice is made up of panels with low-friction polyethylene that provide a smooth, gliding surface. The engineered thermoplastic resists scratches and nicks, but it still has the feel of ice, even when you fall on it, Douglass said.

"It allows the skates to roll over the material like it would on ice," she said. "The plastic sheers off just like real ice does ... It's something we absolutely love."

While an ice-skating rink was not specifically named in the Parks and Recreation Department's master plan last year, Assistant City Manager Glenn Morrison said the concept of the estimated $95,000 project was included. Two of the goals in chapter two of the master plan are to develop and maintain superior parks and recreation services for citizens of all ages and to develop and maintain desirable parks and recreation facilities.
