Your big bang this Fourth of July could cost you big bucks.

Fire marshals throughout the area emphasize that it is against city ordinances to transport, possess or discharge fireworks within city limits or within 5,000 feet of city limits.

This law applies to all Texas cities, and violators could be fined up to $2,000, said Fire Inspector Horace E. Wiggins of the Killeen Fire Department.

"The Copperas Cove Fire Department would like to remind everyone that each year in the United States, fireworks cause approximately 23,000 fires, injure approximately 9,000 people and cause an estimated $35 million in property loss," said CCFD Fire Marshal Johnny P. Caraway. "Children under the age of 15 suffer 45 percent of all injuries, with some injuries being permanent."

Although fireworks can be discharged in the county, the fire marshals warn that this is private property and, if anybody discharges fireworks without property owner permission, they are responsible for damage.

"Everyone likes to celebrate, so please do if safely," Caraway said. "The best way to enjoy fireworks is at a public fireworks display put on by a professional."

Fort Hood will begin its annual fireworks display at 9:30 p.m. Independence Day.

Fire officials urged residents to watch professional fireworks displays instead.

Firefighters from local fire departments are usually out and about on this holiday assisting the police in catching fireworks law violators.
