WEST, Texas — The mayor of West says a nursing home near the scene of a fertilizer plant explosion has been cleared.

Mayor Tommy Muska (MOOSH'-ka) said Thursday the nursing home was in the process of being evacuated due to fires at nearby West Fertilizer Wednesday night when the explosion occurred.

Waco Police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said 5 to 15 people are believed to be dead, with more than 160 people taken to area hospitals. Swanton said between three and five firefighters are still missing.

Muska is also a volunteer firefighter in West, near Waco. He did not answer questions about his fellow volunteer firefighters, but said, "I ask for your prayers."
