HARKER HEIGHTS – Santa Claus will be saddling up two large fire engines at 5:30 p.m. today to make trips around the city with the aid of the Harker Heights Fire Department.

"It is more of what we do and have been doing to make sure people have a good Christmas," said Jack Collier, Harker Heights fire chief. "We do everything we do to make sure that happens."

In his magical manner, Santa will be leaving from two locations: Harker Heights High School on Knight's Way and Harker Heights Fire Station 1 on Indian Trail, stated a HHFD news release.

Both fire engine sleighs will carry Santa through the streets of Harker Heights for residents to see, making several stops along the way, the release stated.

"It is obvious that when we see people's faces that they really enjoy it," Collier said. "We want to try to touch as many people as we can in the positive way instead of when we normally see them."

It will take Claus about 30 minutes to get to his first stops: the YMCA on Bee Line and Union Grove Middle School on Modoc, the release stated. Santa will spend 20 minutes at each stop before pressing on to the next, and it will take him another 30 minutes to get to the following stops.

They will be at the H-E-B on Indian Trail and at Fire Station No. 2 on Stillhouse Lake Road, the release stated.

One of Claus' red fire engine sleighs will make a third stop at the Stop and Go Convenience Store on Fuller Lane while the other will travel the Old Nolanville Road and Nola Ruth area.

Being Claus' chariot is a tradition of HHFD, one it enjoys, Collier said.

Watching children get all excited as they come down the street is the best part, Collier said.

"I think that the parents and the citizens of Harker Heights appreciate this as much as the kids do," Collier said. "It helps get everyone into the Christmas spirit, and they look forward to it."
