Shoemaker High School students were evacuated shortly after 8:30 a.m. Wednesday in response to a called-in bomb threat.

A sweep of the building was made by campus administrators and Killeen Independent School District police. Nothing unusual was found, and students returned to class around 9:30 a.m.

KISD police are still investigating; specific information about the content of the threat and the progress tracking the responsible parties are being withheld at this time.

John Dye, director of school safety, said this is the third bomb threat made this school year. Two bomb threats were made last October.

KISD Public Information Officer Bob Massey said the standard procedure at all campuses during a bomb threat is that the first sweep is made by trained administrators and district police officers.

Depending on their findings, decisions are made if additional support is needed from local police and fire departments, or from Fort Hood bomb detection experts.

Massey said that staff members are trained to notice specific details during a threat.

"They take down the sound of the voice and try to hold them on the phone for as long as possible," Massey said, to benefit the police's ability to trace the call and to basically acquire as much information as possible to aid the investigation.

The administrators who search the school also undergo special training.

Massey said that although this particular threat was defused in less than an hour, every threatening call is documented and analyzed on the merits of criteria developed by the federal government. If a call meets the criteria, immediate evacuation is ordered.

Each KISD campus has developed plans and drills its emergency operations procedures throughout the school year.
