A 29-year-old Fort Hood soldier has been charged in Killeen in connection with the alleged rape of a 12-year-old girl.

Spc. Ruben Bonilla Sanchez Jr. was arraigned Wednesday by Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke, who set the suspect's bond at $100,000 on a charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child, court records show.

About 8:30 a.m. Sept. 14, Killeen police officers went to a convenience store in the 900 block of Terrace Drive, said Carroll Smith, the Killeen police spokeswoman.

"The store clerk called the police, because a 12-year-old girl ran into the store stating she had been kidnapped and raped," Smith said.

During the investigation, Smith said, it was determined that the victim had run away from home on Sept. 13, just after 10 p.m. As she was walking along an unspecified road, she was picked up by Sanchez, who drugged her and later sexually assaulted her, police said.

The next morning, the girl told police, that she was able to get away from Sanchez and ran into the convenience store, where she alerted the clerk. While the victim was inside the store, police said, a Hispanic man followed her inside and attempted to get the girl to leave with him. He fled the store when the clerk informed him that the police were being called, Smith said.

The case was screened Tuesday by the Bell County District Attorney's Office, and a complaint was returned charging Sanchez with aggravated sexual assault of a child, Smith said.

Sanchez was turned over Tuesday to Killeen police by Fort Hood military police. He was being held in the Bell County Jail on Wednesday.

The investigation continues and additional arrests are possible, Smith said.
