TownePlace Suites by Marriott in Killeen, scheduled to open Tuesday, is already booked through August, said Shawn Trainum, general manager.

Most guests are military on temporary duty orders or government contractors.

Theres a very good market here with the military, Trainum said.

The $3.2 million hotel is located at 2401 Florence Road, behind the other Marriott he manages Fairfield Inn & Suites.

Since the hotel is intended for multiple-night stays, guests usually make reservations in advance instead of randomly stopping by.

The TownePlace is not something that has to be on the side of the road like a Fairfield, Trainum said of the hotels location. Generally, it doesnt have to be highly visible.

Marriott describes TownePlace Suites as a mid-priced, extended-stay brand and Fairfield as consistent, quality lodging at an affordable price.

Florence Roads new hotel has 79 rooms, each with a small kitchen, full-size refrigerator, large microwave, garbage disposal, dishwasher and a cooktop, or two-burner stove.

Its 50 percent bigger than a standard hotel room, he said.

The three-story hotel also has a swimming pool and exercise room.

Guests at TownePlace typically stay anywhere from five nights to more than a year, Trainum said.

The hotel has 10 or fewer employees, including full and part-time.

Trainum earned his business management degree from Baylor University in 2000 and has been managing the two properties since.

His father, Jim Trainum, was involved in hotel projects for approximately 30 years in the Killeen area.

His ventures included the Star Motel, Hallmark Motor Inn, Best Western, Holiday Inn Express and Hawthorn Suites.

Jim Trainum started the TownePlace project. He died in March 2004, at age 67.

Marriott launched the TownePlace Suites brand in 1997. There are currently 112 in the United States.
