A former prison guard now faces the possibility of time on the other side of the cell door as she faces a charge of injury to a child.

Justice of the Peace Garland Potvin arraigned Sharon Jones, 57, of Killeen, Thursday on a second-degree felony charge of injury to a child. The charge carries with it a punishment range of two to 20 years in prison if she is convicted. Her bond was set at $50,000.

The arrest affidavit states that officials at a Killeen-area elementary school contacted police when they observed one of their students suffering from an obvious physical discomfort.

The affidavit said the 10-year-old child told school officials that her caretaker, Jones, "had whipped her with a belt and an extension cord the day before for getting into trouble at school."

The affidavit states that the girl has clear abrasions and bruises all over her arms, legs and every other part of her body. The residual marks left by the beatings are consistent with those left by an extension cord or a belt, the affidavit said.

Photos were taken of the girl's injuries, and she was placed in the custody of Child Protective Services.

When police confronted Jones, the affidavit states "she admits to each and every element of the offense."

Carroll Smith, public information officer for the Killeen Police Department, said Jones' current job status lists her as unemployed, but did confirm that she formerly worked as a prison guard at a Texas Department of Corrections facility.
