Motorists in Killeen may notice more efficiency in travel time through busy intersections as early as February of next year.

The City Council recently authorized the purchase of a nearly $119,000 traffic monitoring system that will aid the transportation department in monitoring traffic in real-time and remotely making adjustments.

Scott Osburn, public works director, said the system will maximize travel time through some of the city’s most heavily traveled corridors.

George Lueck, transportation director, said the video display was ordered and is expected to arrive in mid-January.

Installation is expected to be complete sometime in early February.

The system will allow transportation staff to monitor intersections via cameras that have the ability to pan and rotate 360 degrees. Staff will monitor the intersections, noting where adjustments need to be made to ensure a smoother flow of traffic.

Lueck said three cameras are already installed in the city, but won’t be in use until the system is up and running.

Cameras are located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 190 and State Highway 195; U.S. Highway 190 and W.S. Young Drive and U.S. Highway 190 and Trimmier Road.

Lueck said there are plans to install additional cameras in the future along State Highway 195, W.S. Young Drive, Trimmier Road and Bunny Trail.

Hilary Shine, city spokeswoman, said studies were conducted for various projects on all the areas where cameras were installed, and those areas have shown to be some of the busiest in the city.

The traffic monitoring system will be part of the city’s nearly complete $2.1 million transportation facility, which also will house the department’s offices, training classrooms, a sign shop and control room to monitor the city’s traffic signals.
