TEMPLE — Belton Fire Department officials transported two people by ambulance to Scott & White Hospital after an accident Thursday afternoon on northbound Interstate 35 near mile marker 289.

A woman and a young boy sat on the pavement in tears, with patches of blood covering their clothing, arms and faces after the collision between an 18-wheeler dump truck and their Suburban near the center median. The two were believed to have minor injuries, said Sgt. Robert Preston of the Belton Police Department.

The truck driver was not injured.

The 18-wheeler was moving into the center median, which is under construction, to get a load of dirt and gravel when the driver of the Suburban hit it at 12:15 p.m., Preston said.

The Suburban had major damage, he said.

Traffic, although backed up about a mile after the accident, was freely moving as of 1:05 p.m., said a Texas Department of Transportation spokesperson. The Salado Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the accident.
