The Killeen Police Department responded to 34 accidents from midnight to around 4 p.m. Friday, according to spokeswoman Carroll Smith. But there were no serious injuries reported.

Smith said the total does not reflect the number of vehicles that skidded off icy roadways across the city.

Killeen spokeswoman Hilary Shine said the city’s public works department worked through Thursday night and into the early hours of Friday morning to sand roadways in an effort to prevent major accidents.

A bridge on W.S. Young Drive between Rancier Avenue and Veterans Memorial Boulevard remained closed throughout the day Friday. Shine said it was the only street closure in Killeen.

Sgt. Julie Lehmann with the Copperas Cove Police Department said police responded to seven accidents in the city.

Sgt. Stephen Miller with the Harker Heights Police Department said the number of accidents wasn’t available Friday, but officers primarily responded to “mishaps.”

Shine said 16 people used Killeen’s warming shelter Friday.
