Two people died after a train collided with their car near downtown Killeen early Friday morning.
The crash occurred just after 2 a.m. Friday where Gilmer Avenue intersects with railroad tracks in north Killeen.
A police investigation determined a Dodge Ram was northbound on Gilmer Avenue when the driver ignored rail crossing barricades, a news release said.
A Burlington Northern Santa Fe train headed west struck the Ram on its passenger side and propelled the vehicle onto the north side of the railroad tracks, where it came to rest on its side.
A male and female, both 26, died as a result of the crash. Rescue workers attempted to free them with the jaws of life, but they died at the scene.
Their names have not been released, pending notification of next of kin.
Justice of the Peace Bill Cooke pronounced them dead at 2:48 a.m. Cooke said he will not order an autopsy.
Killeen Police Department’s Traffic Unit continues to investigate the incident.
