The sinkhole that appeared on W.S. Young Drive Tuesday will shut down the stretch of road between Illinois Avenue and Arkansas Avenue until Sept. 12, according to city spokeswoman Allison Walker.
The sinkhole made the street unsafe for use. City staff found erosion and failure of a drainage pipe, Walker said.
Repairs include opening the road to replace the pipe and then rebuilding the section of the street. Traffic around Manor Middle School and several businesses, such as Marksmen Firearms, Taco Bell and Mickey’s, will be affected by the closure.
Also closed for emergency repair, through Friday, is the right eastbound lane of Elms Road, just east of Christie Drive. A storm drain failure was found by maintenance crews under the roadway.
“The City of Killeen apologizes for any inconvenience caused by this closure and appreciates your cooperation as we improve this roadway,” Walker said in a news release.
Walker also provided information on a construction project.
Walker said the intersection of Garrison Avenue and Gray Street will be closed through September for curb, gutter and sidewalk repair. All traffic must use detour routes and motorists should exercise caution.
