CORYELL COUNTY — A Tuesday evening wreck left one Coryell County woman dead and a man in serious condition, authorities said.

Gatesville resident and home health care worker Carol Ann Graves, 62, was pronounced dead at the scene after 8:30 p.m. Tuesday by Justice of the Peace Coy Latham, said Harpin Myers, a Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman.

A man was rushed to a Temple area hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, Myers said.

“Both were wearing their seatbelts,” he said.

According to DPS reports, Graves’ 2013 Ford Escape was traveling southbound without headlights on State Highway 36, about 1½ miles south of Flat near Gatesville and Fort Hood.

A 2011 Chevrolet 2500 truck was traveling north on the highway when the Ford crossed into the northbound lane, Myers said.

“(The driver) took evasive action to the right,” Myers said, but his vehicle collided with hers, traveled across the southbound lane and came to rest in a ditch facing southwest, he said.

The other vehicle spun and came to rest in the eastbound ditch.
