Killeen police wrote 183 citations during a special red-light enforcement effort Thursday.

Police wrote tickets in the area of Farm-to-Market 2410 and FM 3470 between 6:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., according to a statement from the Killeen Police Department.

Of the 183 citations, 151 were issued for running red lights. In addition, four citations were issued for failure to yield the right of way on a red light, a citation was issued for failure to stop at designated point. A citation was issued for failure to control speed and 25 “nonhazardous” citations also were issued.

Officers also cited one commercial vehicle for failing to secure a heavy load.

In addition to the citation, a vehicle crash occurred nearby, and a citation was written for failure to control speed. There were no injuries reported in the crash, police said.

In 2014, Killeen traffic crashes resulted in five deaths. In 2013, there were eight.

Excessive speed was a factor in several of those crashes, according to police.

The department announced Thursday’s enforcement effort after its traffic unit reviewed the area of FM 2410 and FM 3470 for several months, and found a high number of crashes where failure to control speed and running red lights had been the contributing factors.
