A Nolanville man died in an early morning accident Friday in Temple.

Raymond Carrasco Sr., 53, was struck by a vehicle on northbound Interstate 35 and thrown down an embankment to his death, Temple police Cpl. Christopher Wilcox said.

Shortly before 5:50 a.m., Carrasco’s Jeep struck the right side guardrail on the bridge at mile marker 303A, causing minor damage to his vehicle, Wilcox said. Police think Carrasco got out of his vehicle at that point, maybe to check the damage. A little while later, a Ford pickup approached the accident scene, lost control, struck the cement center divider or another vehicle, slid across the roadway, hit the guardrail and struck Carrasco.

The impact caused Carrasco to be thrown about 50 feet down an embankment to the service road below, Wilcox said.

Carrasco was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace David Barfield.

The pickup driver was transported to Scott & White Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, Wilcox said.

Beverly Wigginton, who occasionally worked with Carrasco at Wilsonart, where he was employed, said he must have been on his way to work when the accident happened.

“It’s so sad. I’ve worked overtime on the same crew. He was a very nice, funny and kind person,” Wigginton said.
