COPPERAS COVE — Authorities identified a 45-year-old Copperas Cove man who died after his motorcycle collided with a vehicle on Friday.

Copperas Cove police identified the man as Matthew Leyfett Walker. Walker died Friday night after his Harley-Davidson motorcycle collided with a 2003 Mercury Sable on U.S. Highway 190.

The crash happened about 8 p.m. near the intersection of U.S. Highway 190 and Laura Street. Walker had been driving east on the highway when the driver of the Sable attempted to turn left from westbound U.S. 190 onto Laura Street.

The driver of the Sable failed to yield the right of way to Walker, and the motorcycle ran into the Sable. Walker was taken from the scene to Scott & White Hospital in Temple, according to a news release from police.

Walker died at the hospital. Justice of the Peace G.W. Ivey pronounced him dead at 10:24 p.m. Friday.

The crash remains under investigation. Ivey ordered an autopsy to be performed at the Southwest Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas.

Copperas Cove police are withholding the name of the driver of the Sable at this time.

Walker’s death is the third fatality in the Killeen area resulting from a motorcycle crash in 2013. The previous fatal accident occurred July 13 near the intersection of Stan Schlueter Loop and Fort Hood Street in Killeen.
