Killeen police handed out around 100 traffic tickets in four hours Thursday along U.S. Highway 190 at the Rosewood Overpass construction site, where speed limits were recently decreased from 60 to 55 mph.

The speeding crackdown began at 6:30 a.m., with seven police cruisers and three police motorcycles engaging in continuous traffic stops, said Tony Binion, service manager at Caliber Collision, which overlooks the highway.

“It boggles my mind that people don’t get it. You have to do the speed limit,” Binion said.

“It’s like NASCAR. (The police) don’t even turn off their engines. Thirty seconds and boom they’re gone.”

Killeen Police Department spokeswoman Carroll Smith said officers take speed violations very seriously in construction zones, where traffic fines double when workers are present.

Another recent crackdown in the area gathered 98 citations in just two hours, Smith said.

“It gets dangerous for those workers out there,” Smith said. “If you are speeding in a construction zone you will get cited because you could turn the wrong way and kill somebody.”

The stretch of U.S. 190 under enforcement, between Stan Schlueter Loop and the Harker Heights city limits, is poised for two major construction projects over the next two years.

Both the $23 million Rosewood Overpass project and the $55 million U.S. 190 widening project are expected to be completed by fall 2015.
