Nearly 300 miles of highway in eight Texas counties, including Bell and Coryell counties, are set for resealing by the Texas Department of Transportation over the next three months.

The process, called seal coating, places a new layer of oil rock material on the roadway to increase the life and safety of the roads, said Ken Roberts, spokesman for the Texas Department of Transportation.

Work crews normally spend between one and four days sealing a road, significantly less than most road projects, which last months or years, Roberts said.

“We are not rebuilding the roads; we are only resealing them,” Roberts said.

Crews will administer the treatment to state highways, U.S. highways and farm-to-market roads in the Waco District area.

Roberts said a small crack in the asphalt will get bigger with each rain event. The separation will eventually cause pot holes, which are a serious hazard on the highway.

“When you get a crack and you get water in that crack, the road deteriorates,” Roberts said.

“(Sealing) minimizes the damage.”

Resealing can increase the life of the roads by three to six years, which saves the department money, said Roberts.

A new layer of oil and gravel also provides better traction and maneuverability on the roads, Roberts said.

The $11.4 million project was awarded to F.N. Ploch Construction Co. of New Braunfels.

Roberts said drivers should exercise caution in all work areas and observe warning signs.
