The Killeen Independent School District, which also includes public schools at Fort Hood, Harker Heights and Nolanville, canceled school today due to inclement weather, the district announced on its Facebook page this morning.

Also closed for the day are Temple, Lampasas, Florence, Copperas Cove and Belton independent school districts. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas A&M-Central Texas and Central Texas College closed their campuses as well.

Fort Hood announced physical training for all units is canceled today due to inclement weather.

Soldiers and airmen will report to work at 11 a.m. Department of the Army civilians will report to work at 10 a.m.

Multiple vehicle accidents were seen on area highways Thursday night and other school districts are planning to start classes late as a snow and freezing rain covered much of Central Texas.

U.S. Highway 190 and Interstate 35 traffic reduced to a craw not long after sunset.

"Northbound I-35 is backed up almost 8 miles from Belton almost to Loop 363 on the north side of Temple," according to a 9 p.m. Thursday email from Jodi Wheatley, an I-35 information specialist with the Texas Department of Transportation.

I-35 traffic was still backed up this morning.

The Killeen Police Department shut down the W.S. Young bridge that passes between Rancier and Veteran’s Memorial Blvd.

Police said the bridge was iced over and cautioned motorists to drive with care.

"If it is not necessary to be on the roadways during this weather we are asking you to please stay inside," read a statement released by KPD on Thursday.
