The Texas Department of Transportation will start a $9.5 million U.S. Highway 190 project Monday.

The project will add one inside lane on the eastbound and westbound sides of U.S. Highway 190, from W.S. Young Drive in Killeen to Farm-to-Market 2410 in Harker Heights, as well as a turning lane on the eastbound FM 2410 bridge at the highway’s frontage road, according to TxDOT officials.

The project also will add a sidewalk on the westbound FM 2410 bridge above U.S. 190, TxDOT spokesman Ken Roberts said. The bridge will be widened to 43 feet.

TxDOT also will upgrade culverts and other bridges to U.S. 190 to accommodate the additional lanes on the highway, where a Jersey wall will barricade opposite traffic lanes.

Hewitt-based Big Creek Construction will construct the 3-mile project by fall 2014, weather permitting.

Delays, congestion, lane closures

Travelers can expect delays, congestion and occasional single-lane closures in the work zone, especially from 7 p.m. to 6 or 7 a.m., Roberts said. Lanes will be closed along the main thoroughfare and frontage roads.

“The intent is not to impede the flow during the daytime hours,” Roberts said. “If we should have to detour, it will only be temporarily ... to the frontage road.”

Harker Heights Public Works Director Mark Hyde welcomed the bridge expansion. “It fits well with the rest of the work on 2410 that’s happening now,” he said.

Harker Heights’ City Council has sought federal funding for widening of FM 2410 north and south of U.S. 190.

During construction, drivers should observe all warning signs, use caution when passing near construction workers and equipment, and seek alternate routes when possible, according to a TxDOT news release.

Would be nice if they had a graphic to show the work to be done.
