TEMPLE — The bridge on West Adams Avenue crossing over Interstate 35 and connecting to southbound I-35 is scheduled to close permanently at 10 p.m. Sunday.

Drivers heading south on I-35 may take several alternate routes, Texas Department of Transportation I-35 information specialist Jodi Wheatley said.

Westbound travelers on Adams Avenue will cross I-35 on the westbound Airport Road/U.S. 53 overpass. Drivers needing to head south on I-35 will be detoured back to I-35 by going left on any one of three streets: 43rd Street, 49th Street or Apache Drive, then back east on Adams Avenue to the I-35 interchange and then south onto I-35 southbound.

Detour signs for I-35 southbound will be in place to direct drivers left on 43rd Street, 49th Street or Apache Drive. At the exit from Adams to southbound I-35, existing signs will direct them to the north or south main lanes.

This will be the beginning of an extensive construction effort in this area, which is anticipated to last three years, TxDOT said. Some of the work will include the removal of existing bridge structures and the building of a new intersection and bridges.
