An 8-year-old boy was hospitalized in critical condition Monday after being hit by a vehicle while riding his bicycle.

Killeen Police Department officers responded to a crash in the 4200 block of Cessnock Drive at 6:11 p.m. Monday. Witnesses said the boy was riding his bicycle south in the 6400 block of Nessy Drive on the eastside of the roadway, when he failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Nessy and Cessnock drives. The child rode into oncoming traffic and was hit by a black Ford pickup, police said in a statement. The driver attempted to stop, but was unable to do so, witnesses said.

The boy was immediately transported in critical condition to Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood and was then airlifted to McLane Children’s Hospital Scott & White in Temple, police said.
