Children snacked on Halloween candy, watched clowns create balloon animals and enjoyed an array of bounce houses Sunday afternoon at the second annual Trick or Treat for Hope at the Harker Heights Events Center.

The Halloween event was designed to promote breast cancer awareness and provide a safe space for children to receive candy, said Sydney Grant, owner of First Gear Media Promotions, one of the event organizers. The promotions company paired with the Boyz 2 Men Youth Program of Killeen to host the trick-or-treat extravaganza.

“It’s a community event to bring businesses together,” Grant said. Though free, the festival allowed visitors to provide monetary donations and purchase T-shirts. A portion of the proceeds will go toward the Breast Cancer Research Center in Austin. Groups including the Cadillac Car Club and Game Changer donated their time, and the Harker Heights Events Center donated the space.

Photographers with 4forty4 Photography and All American Portraits provided free family photos.

Activities included a cake walk, costume contest and dance contest, said volunteer Bianca Smith. “People have slowly been coming in.” Many children wore their Halloween costumes and danced to music provided by the DJ.

Like many of the visitors, Niesha Depp and her family found out about the festivities through word of mouth from their friends.

“She loves the clown,” Depp said of her 1½-year-old daughter, decked out in a Mickey Mouse costume. Children lined up to have their faces painted and watch the clown perform tricks.

“It’s another alternative to going door to door,” Grant said. The afternoon proved an ideal combination of fall festivities and awareness of a cause important to local women.
