The Killeen Independent School District Board of Trustees continued on Tuesday following through with its plan to cut jobs in the face of a state revenue reduction estimated at $28 million for next fiscal year.
In a board workshop, trustees unanimously approved three separate motions, two of which proposed nonrenewal of term contracts for employees, and another that terminated probationary contracts for employees.
The latter motion identified 38 individuals who are currently working under probationary contracts as newly hired school district employees. A total of 32 individuals were identified for nonrenewal of term contracts.
Afterward, KISD Superintendent Robert Muller said the positions named included teachers, administrative support, counselors, academic advisers and campus support staff - all at secondary campuses. Muller said the board's motions were carrying out the cost savings plan he presented in a series of workshops last month.
"The actions taken today execute that plan," Muller said.
A total of 202.5 positions have been targeted for elimination in KISD's plan - 75 secondary teachers, 16 secondary support/administration positions and 10 connected with program reductions.
The district classified 48.5 positions identified for nonrenewal last month - some of which were vacant - as central office, or non-campus. The elimination of 53 elementary teaching positions will be achieved through attrition.
Muller said 21 special education teaching positions also are expected to be eliminated. Those jobs fall outside KISD's already outlined cost-cutting process and are funded through federal stimulus money that is no longer available, the superintendent said.
KISD's estimated $28 million revenue reduction may or may not be realized, depending on the outcome of budget bill deliberations under way in the Texas House and Senate. The House version calls for a roughly $8 billion cut to public education funding over the next two fiscal years while the Senate version calls for a $4 billion cut.
