TEMPLE — University of Mary Hardin-Baylor honor students gave the gift of imagination, reading and hope to children in Central Texas through a recent book drive.

Kappa Delta Pi, an international honor society, held a spring book drive that netted 202 books that were donated to AWARE Central Texas children. This was the first service project for the UMHB honor society, which was granted a charter at the UMHB campus in November.

Sarah Coy, who headed the drive, said she is proud of the results.

“We are a new organization, so we were very pleased the book drive generated such great results,” she said. “The goal was to provide children’s books for distribution through AWARE’s parenting classes which stress the importance of reading at home.”

Literacy is a part of Kappa Delta Pi, and UMHB wanted to carry on the tradition, Coy said.

The drive began Jan. 27 when the public could drop off books at various locations.

Financial contributions also were accepted. Books were purchased from the financial contributions.

Coy, a graduate student and teacher, said members of the organization understand that reading is important to children when they are young. It also contributes to their language development.

“It’s good to know that our efforts will go to helping children in this way,” Coy said.

The books were delivered to AWARE on Wednesday, and Coy said they were excited to receive them.

UMHB has a long record of public service. James Stafford, director of public relations and marketing, said this project was one of the many service-related contributions students are involved in.

“It speaks to who our students are. They are invested in community service,” he said.
