After serving together in Afghanistan, a veteran continued to ensure one old battle buddy wouldn’t be left behind.
Sean Parnell, author of “Outlaw Platoon,” helped a local mortgage company give Khanh Tan Nguyen a new house in Killeen.
In his book, Parnell includes stories of Nguyen, a Purple Heart recipient, and his service.
“Today is really special, because a guy I fought and bled with on the battlefield will receive a home,” Parnell said during a ceremony Thursday.
It was while preparing to deploy to Afghanistan with the 10th Mountain Division based out of Fort Drum, N.Y., that Parnell met Nguyen. Together, they were part of the “Outlaw” platoon that saw an 85 percent casualty rate in the war.
Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation sponsored the home giveaway during an education event to certify real estate professionals as “military residential specialists” Thursday morning at the Courtyard by Marriott in Killeen.
“In cooperation with the Boot Campaign and Military Warrior Support Foundation, Fairway’s financial contributions have resulted in eight home giveaways to U.S. wounded warriors,” Fairway said in its news release.
This is the 482nd home given to a veteran by the Military Warrior Support Foundation, said Judd Kennedy, the organization’s media and outreach coordinator. “The homes are donated to us, and we find the best fit for each applicant,” he said. Applicants are all combat wounded veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The Boot Campaign’s role is to cultivate awareness about the home giveaways and sponsor a three-year financial mentoring program for each new homeowner as part of the Heroes into Homeowners campaign, said Meghan Mcdermott, director of communications.
Parnell is one of their organization’s Hero Ambassadors.
Together, they have been traveling the country all year.
Fairway is their biggest housing partner.
Nearly 200 veterans and real estate agents watched as Parnell spoke prior to the house giveaway presentation.
