All active-duty soldiers, veterans and their immediate families are invited to the fifth annual Welcome Home Celebration from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Carl Levin Park in Harker Heights.

In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3892, 201 VFW Drive adjacent to East Veterans Memorial Drive in Harker Heights.

The event, sponsored by the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System, features free food, door prizes and a variety of entertainment for the whole family.

A job fair, featuring more than 20 employers wanting to hire veterans, is planned, as well as a wide range of booths slated to share information about VA health programs, benefits, and 30 state colleges and universities.

For veterans who have not signed up for VA health care, a registration booth will be available. Veterans need to bring their DD214 to complete the process.

“One of the other purposes of the event is to reach out and give them information to support them and let them know about the VA services,” said Deborah Meyer, public affairs specialist at the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System. “We want them to have fun, but also to be able to give them information on what’s available to them.”

Soldiers and veterans are encouraged to register for the event at www.centraltexas.va.gov/News/OEFMedia.asp; however, registration is not required.Combat service members have five years from their date of discharge to receive free health care for any condition that may be related to combat services, Meyer said.
